| Description | “Instant Death” is a track from the Beastie Boys' 5th studio album, Hello Nasty, released on July 14th, 1998. The twenty-second (and final) song on said release, it closes the record on a somber note, as its lyrics reflect upon two important figures in Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz’s life. The first is his best friend (and close friend to the other Beasties, as well), Dave Scilken. Scilken and Ad-Rock performed together in their punk outlet The Young and the Useless, which preceded his [Ad-Rock’s] days with the B-Boys. Unfortunately, Scilken developed an addiction to drugs, which he had attempted to kick by entering rehab. Sadly, on May 26th, 1991, Scilken succumbed to an overdose shortly after completing said rehab; he was just 22 years old. His death deeply affected the Beastie Boys, and was the catalyst for them to reevaluate their reckless lifestyles in the limelight. Their third album, 1992’s Check Your Head, was dedicated to him. The second is his mother, Doris Keefe Horovitz. Being raised primarily by her (his father, the [now disgraced] playwright Israel Horovitz, divorced from Doris when Ad-Rock was just three years old), it must have been devastating for the young Ad-Rock when she passed. Mrs. Horovitz passed away sometime in 1986 (before the release of Licensed to Ill, the Beasties' debut studio release), at the age of 45 due to cirrhosis of the liver. If one looks in the liner notes of said album, there is a short line written in her memory: “This album is dedicated to Doris Keefe Horovitz.” |
