Album | Haunted |
Release Date | 2000 |
Description | In general this song appears to be a nuanced work created as a combination of elements from Johnny / Pelafina’s relationship within House of Leaves, as evidenced by the mention of the Spanish Doll. One could see this as being the narrative from the perspective of Pelafina, feeling as though she has been abandoned, as evidenced by Pelafina’s used of the Spanish Doll concept on page 610. However, given the context of the album, it’s also possible that the sentiments could be said to be coming from Annie (The little girl) and the message is directed at her Father (Tad Danielewski). Parts of it could be (and almost definitely are) drawn from specific things that Poe experienced throughout her life. Along these lines, it’s also possible that the specific details in House of Leaves which are echoed in this work, actually began here in this song. In response to people generalizing “Haunted” and saying that it is “based on House of Leaves”, Mark explained that both works were created at the same time, and both works influenced each other, but are in-and-of-themselves whole works. |
Lyrics | This place feels so unfamiliar And yet I know it well I think I used to belong here But the only way I can tell Is that I miss you still And I cannot find you here You left me tattered and torn Just like that sweet Spanish doll Sweet Spanish Sweet Spanish Doll I went down to the alley way (Sierra la Bonita) And found that you were gone (Si nunca tes fueras) You left no word no message I still don't know exactly what went wrong (Lágrima) But now no matter where I go I always seem to return (Buscame) To where you left me tattered and torn (Estoy rompida mi muñeca) Just like that sweet Spanish doll Sweet Spanish Sweet Spanish Doll A memory gilded in red and gold (De oro) Beauty guarded and never sold (Cuidame) I keep it with me wherever I go And I love you still (Recuerdame) No matter how a story will unfold You know I always will (Esta conmigo) Have part of you here In this souvenir Spanish doll You might also likeA stranger in this world without you Is all that I can ever be All I know that's pure and clear You left it with me here In this souvenir Spanish, Spanish, Spanish, Spanish Doll Father: We hear of a lovely daughter Shot down in her mistaken flight Sweet Spanish, sweet Farther: Unaware yet how her life will be affected By this experience Sweet Child: Mommy, how come you cry? Spanish doll Father: While what was really happening Was in the years of her childhood Sweet Spanish, sweet Father: Perhaps that is where the real story is In her family house Child: How come it's a house of leaves? Sweet Spanish, sweet Child: How come it's a house of leaves? Recuerdame |
