Description | “Doin' Time” was a single off of Sublime’s final eponymous album. It was one of their few songs on the Billboard charts, peaking at #87. It tells the story of an unfaithful woman who makes her lover feel as if he’s doing time in prison. As always, you can make a case for the heroin/girl metaphor, but here it is more likely to just be about a girl. This song takes the melody of George Gershwin’s original “Summertime”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DI6ysDemk The exact sample came from Herbie Mann’s version of the song played at 45 RPM instead of 33. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbWg_xKyi-M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yJhkDiuh4U#t=33 There is also a repeating sample taken from Malcolm McLaren’s song Buffalo Gals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SgvJY9xxcA There have been multiple hip-hop remixes of this song, featuring Snoop Dogg and The Pharcyde. |
